Redskins embarassed by Giants, 45-12

The Washington Redskins looked like they could have cared less in a 45-12 loss to the New York Giants.

Fans were excited to come see a Redskins team that had continued to play hard and was showing signs of life.

They had hung tough with the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles and beaten the Oakland Raiders on the road.

Instead, fans were treated to a brutal display of football as the Redskins went into halftime trailing 24-0.

Things didn’t get much better in the second half, and any slim hope that Jim Zorn had of returning next year had to have gone right out the window.

Redskins talking to Shanahan

The Washington Redskins are in talks with Mike Shanahan about becoming the team’s next head coach.

Shanahan, who led the Denver Broncos to a couple of Super Bowls before being fired at the end of last year, has been generating a lot of interest from teams that anticipate head coaching vacancies.

New general manager Bruce Allen said that nothing has been decided and that he should be given time to develop a relationship with current head coach Jim Zorn, whose job has been in jeopardy for weeks.

The big question remains how much power owner Daniel Snyder will be willing to give Allen, although early indications are that it will be more than he has given past GM’s.

It seems to be very much like a Peter Angelos situation, where the owner thought he knew best and overruled all of his personnel men only to realize down the road that it wasn’t working.

Redskins knock off Raiders, 34-13

The Washington Redskins continued their run of strong play late in the year in a 34-13 win over the Oakland Raiders.

Running back Quinton Ganther found the end zone twice in his first career start to spur the Redskins onto victory.

Kudos are also in order for tight end Fred Davis, who also scored two touchdowns. He has quickly become a very dangerous red zone threat.

All of the sudden, quarterback Jason Campbell doesn’t look so bad with some decent protection and a couple of weapons around him.

It was just a win over the hapless Raiders, but the same Oakland team did surprise the Steelers just a week earlier.

Redskins hire Allen, Cerrato out

The Washington Redskins have accepted the resignation of Vinny Cerrato and hired Bruce Allen as their next general manager.

For Redskins fans, it’s a day that has been a long time coming. Cerrato has conspired with Snyder to run the franchise into the ground, but a new day is coming.

Snyder chose not to throw Cerrato under the bus, saying simply that it was time to make a change.

Allen comes to the Redskins after being fired just last year by the Tampa Bay Buccaneeers, who he helped guide to a Super Bowl.

The coach under Allen was Jon Gruden, which has fueled speculation that he may be the next Redskins coach.

Redskins edged by Saints, 33-30

The Washington Redskins saw their bid for an upset spoiled in overtime by the New Orleans Saints, 33-30.

The Redskins led the entire game and had a chance to put things away for good in the fourth quarter.

Up by a touchdown with less than two minutes to play, Washington lined up for a 26-yard field goal attempt.

To the horror of the team and fans, the kick sailed wide right, and the Saints promptly threw a long touchdown pass to tie the game.

New Orleans then took advantage of a Washington turnover in the extra session to set up the game-winning kick.

Redskins edged by Eagles, 27-24

The Washington Redskins continue to compete but it wasn’t enough in a 27-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

It was arguably quarterback Jason Campbell’s best game of the season, as he tossed three touchdown passes and protected the ball.

Without Albert Haynesworth and DeAngelo Hall, it was very difficult for the Redskins to match up with all of Philadelphia’s offensive weapons.

The Redskins did a nice job in the red zone of forcing the Eagles to kick field goals instead of allowing touchdowns, and that kept them in the game.

You just got the sense that the Eagles were simply too good to lose at home to Washington and would find a way to pull it out in the end.
