Redskins edged by Cowboys, 7-6

The Washington Redskins blew a fourth quarter lead in a 7-6 loss to the rival Dallas Cowboys.

It was a tremendous performance by the Washington defense, holding an explosive offensive team to just a touchdown.

A missed field goal in the fourth quarter by Sean Suisham came back to haunt the Redskins in their upset bid.

The offense’s inability to pound the ball into the end zone was also the difference in the game, but you can’t expect much out of that M.A.S.H. unit.

Beating Dallas in their own stadium would have been the kind of win the Redskins could have hung their hat on, but it wasn’t to be.

Redskins Bumble Away Game, Lose to Cowboys 7-6

The Washington Redskins somehow managed to maintain a lead over the Dallas Cowboys late into the fourth quarter on Sunday… but collapsed when it counted, as Tony Romo led the Cowboys to victory at home over the Redskins, 7-6.

Romo injured himself in the first quarter on a tackle after a Marion Barber fumble, one that left his back throbbing for the rest of the game. Whether it was his injury or the Redskins defense, Romo was clearly affected by something, as he had a terrible first half.

Yet Romo guided the Cowboys down the field towards the end of the fourth quarter, right after Washington kicker Shaun Suisham missed a 50-yarder that would have stretched the game to a two-score lead. Suisham also missed a 39-yard field goal right before halftime – his first two misses of the season.

“To lose it like that in the end in a hostile situation, it’s just so hard,” Washington coach Jim Zorn said. “Yet, we hung in there. I believe this is a special team of players who will not just chuck things in being 3-7. … We’re going to look at our roster, patch it up and go again.”

QB Jason Campbell performed admirably without starting RB Clinton Portis, as he went 24-of-37 for 243 yards. He threw no touchdowns, and his lone interception occurred within the two minute warning after the Dallas score, when Campbell was hoping to lead the Redskins into field goal range one final time.

The ‘Skins were on the losing end of this game in every which was, as they lost backup RB Ladell Betts to a knee injury in the fourth quarter. Rock Cartwright stepped in for Betts, who reportedly tore two ligaments in his knee and will miss the remainder of the season.

Portis out against Cowboys

The Washington Redskins will be without one of their best players when they take on the rival Dallas Cowboys.

For the second straight week, running back Clinton Portis will be unable to play because of a concussion suffered against Atlanta.

Portis is still dealing with blurred vision, meaning the Redskins will have to keep him on the sidelines yet again.

Ladell Betts will get the start again with plenty of help from backup Rock Cartwright. Both were effective Sunday against the Broncos.

There has been a much bigger focus on concussions this year, which has meant team excercising more caution with players who suffer from them.

Redskins upset Broncos, 27-17

The Washington Redskins pulled off Sunday’s biggest upset with a 27-17 victory over the Denver Broncos.

The Redskins trailed during the first half because of key breakdowns in their secondary, allowing Brandon Marshall to get wide open.

Marshall had two touchdown passes and over 100 yards in the first half, but the Redskins quickly patched up their coverage issues.

The result was a defense that took over the game in the second half and knocked out quarterback Kyle Orton.

The offense was effective running the ball, which set up the play-action pass and gave Jason Campbell more time to throw.

Portis to miss Broncos game

Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis will not play against the Denver Broncos because of a concussion.

Portis left last week’s game against the Atlanta Falcons in the first quarter after suffering the head injury.

He took a helmet-to-helment blow and still does not remember the play on which he was injured.

He did not return to the game and saw seen standing on the sidelines in street clothes during the second half.

With Portis unable to play, the Redskins will turn to a combination of Ladell Betts and Rock Cartwright in the backfield.

Haynesworth Fined in Sideline Fracas

DT Albert Haynesworth was fined $7,500 by the NFL for his role in a sideline fight on Sunday during the Falcons/Redskins game.

Redskins safety LaRon Landry was also fined $5,000 by the league for a late hit on Falcons QB Matt Ryan, which started the fight on the sideline.

Redskins LB DeAngelo Hall found himself in the middle of the fray, after spending four seasons playing for Atlanta from 2004-2007. He said on Sunday that Falcons coach Mike Smith cursed at him, and that a Falcons’ assistant attempted to “get in some licks” on Hall during the fight.

A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Smith has been fined $15,000 by the league, the most severe penalty handed down to anyone involved with the incident.

Hall claimed that he was trying to pull Landry away from the Falcons’ sideline after Landry dished out the late hit on Ryan, but the Falcons players and staff immediately surrounded the two Redskins.

” … I’m always ready to mix it up. And to see those guys kind of linger over there, yeah, I don’t know what was going through their minds,” Hall said to Washington radio station 106.7 The Fan earlier this week.

Redskins fall to Falcons, 31-17

The Washington Redskins battled hard but came up short in a 31-17 loss to the host Atlanta Falcons.

The Redskins quickly fell behind 14-0 before finally getting things going on the offensive side of the ball.

Quarterback Jason Campbell was roughed up several times throughout the game and had to leave twice.

The Redskins also had to deal with the loss of running back Clinton Portis, who suffered a head contusion in the early going.

Give Washington credit for playing hard until the final whistle despite falling behind early on the road.

Redskins Flattened by Falcons, 31-17

The Washington Redskins showed signs of life for the first time in weeks, but Matt Ryan and the Falcons cast the suddenly-feisty ‘Skins aside on Sunday, 31-17.

The Falcons jumped off to an early start at the Georgia Dome, building a 24-3 halftime lead on the legs of RB Michael Turner, a TD pass from Ryan to TE Tony Gonzalez, and a 64-yard interception return of Jason Campbell for a TD.

But for the first time in weeks, the Redskins were down, but they weren’t out. Campbell rallied the ‘Skins after halftime, leading them on two touchdown drives on their first two possessions in the second half.

“They ended up having a little bit of pride in what they were doing,” coach Jim Zorn said.

The second TD came right as the fourth quarter started, giving the ‘Skins nearly a quarter of work left with only a 7-point deficit, however; Turner broke off a 58-yard run to put the game out of reach.

The game wasn’t without its controversy, either. LB DeAngelo Hall, a two-time Pro Bowler with the Falcons from 2004-2007 that now plays for the Redskins, found himself in the middle of a fight on the Falcons’ sideline, a fight which has drawn review from the league.

In more bad news for the ‘Skins, RB Clinton Portis left the game with a concussion, did not return, and is likely to miss this week’s upcoming game against the Denver Broncos.
